This exhibit has been updated and was migrated to this platform in 2024. The original exhibit was created by Rice’s Houston Action Research Team (HART) program in Summer 2015. The Convict Leasing HART program project began following the donation of archival materials by Reginald Moore, founder and head of the Texas Slave Descendants Society. The items in the archive were digitized and described by Rice undergraduates Alexandra Franklin, Ryan Deal, and Breland Coleman. Amanda Focke of the Woodson Research Center assisted with the preparation of documents for presentation in an online exhibit and uploaded the collection to the digital archive. An advising team consisting of Dr. Alan Steinberg, Dr. Lora Wildenthal, and Jay Ford provided essential guidance and support.
