William J. Clinton Science Policy Collection
This collection hosts materials related to the science and technology policies, agencies, and professionals of the William J. Clinton Administration (1993-2001). In 1993, President Clinton selected Dr. John H. ("Jack") Gibbons, a physicist serving as Director of the Congress' Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), as his Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, being simultaneously confirmed as director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). That same year, President Clinton established the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), with Dr. Gibbons serving as co-chairman along with John A. Young, former President and CEO of Hewlett-Packard.
Dr. Gibbons retired in 1998 and was succeeded by Dr. Neal F. Lane, Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and former Provost of Rice University. Dr. Lane was sworn in as Director of OSTP in August 1998 and served in that capacity and as co-chair of PCAST until the end of the Clinton Administration in 2001.
The materials of this collection are sourced from the archives of the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum and are reproduced here as part of the public domain.
