Edward Chen family collection
This collection consists of presentations on the theme of Houstonians of Asian heritage written by Dr. Edward C. M. Chen. One presentation focuses on Asian American Rice alums in honor of Rice University's centennial in 2012. Others include a tourist guide highlighting Asian history in Houston, and a celebration of the life of Dr. Chen’s father, Edward K.T. Chen.
Edward K.T. Chen was born in San Francisco, California and dedicated his life to preserving and promoting Chinese identity and rights in the United States, working as a government official, diplomat, and educator. He moved to Houston in 1933, where he became the first Chinese-American professor in the city while working at the University of Houston. He and his wife Janie Ng had two children, Rice alumnus Dr. Edward C.M. Chen, who became Chief Chemist at Signal Chemical Company, and Margaret Fay Jane Chen.
