Osterhout family papers
This collection contains correspondence, news clippings, and other related family memorabilia about the lives of John Patterson Osterhout and his family in Texas and in Central America during the latter half of the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries.
John Patterson Osterhout held a number of positions including but not limited to: officer in the Confederate Army, newspaper editor, lawyer, rancher, and store owner in Texas while being a prominent member of the Baptist church and Masonic communities. Originally from Pennsylvania, Osterhout moved to Texas in 1851, only returning home to marry Junia Roberts Osterhout. The couple had six children with one dying in infancy.
