General George Cullum Civil War letter
This collection consists of a letter by General Collum and is addressed to an unnamed colonel. His letter discusses his promotion to the rank of brigadier general of volunteers, reflects on his wartime experiences, and details his orders to leave Missouri under the command of General Henry Halleck.
George Washington Cullum was born on February 25, 1809 in New York City. Graduating from West Point in 1833 with a commission in the Corps of Engineers, he worked on a variety of engineering projects until his reassignment. In 1861 he was promoted to major, serving as an aide to General Winfield Scott and would serve in the army until his retirement in 1874. He died February 28, 1892 in New York City.
