Capt. James A. Baker and the Rice Institute papers
This collection consists of land grant certificates believed to be related to the land holdings of the Rice Institute, now Rice University. These materials date from 1844 to 1915.
Captain James A. Baker was born to James Addison and Rowena Baker on January 10, 1857 in Huntsville, Texas. He graduated from the Texas Military Institute in Austin, Texas and was admitted to the bar in 1880. He was an attorney practicing law in Houston, a banker, and businessman. Baker was William Marsh Rice’s attorney and as an executor of the will, was instrumental in proving that Rice had been murdered.
