Oveta Culp Hobby papers
This collection consists of photographs, interviews, correspondence, and other documents recounting Oveta Culp Hobby’s public life. The materials show Hobby in her roles as a business, media, military, and political leader, and include items from her service in the Women's Army Corps and as Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare.
Oveta Culp Hobby was born in Killeen, Texas to Isaac Culp and Emma Hoover Culp in 1905. She became actively involved in Democratic politics in Texas and served in multiple administrative roles for the state legislature. Later she married former governor William Pettus Hobby. She served as the first director of the Women’s Army Corp in 1942 to 1945 and was the first person appointed to be the United States Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare from 1953 to 1955. After her government service, she continued her relationship with the Houston Post, which her husband's family owned. She worked as editor, publisher, and chair of the board. Hobby died on August 16, 1995 and was buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
