Chuan-Hua Gershom Lowe was born in Nanchang, China, and in 1920 he emigrated to the U.S. to attend the University of Chicago. He worked as a journalist, lecturer, writer, counselor, and embassy representative in China, India, Argentina, Canada, and the U.S. After his retirement from the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C. in the 1960s, Lowe pursued a career as a library cataloger until his final retirement in 1972.
