Braes Republican Women's Club records
This collection includes a scrapbook, the club bylaws, an event pamphlet from the Greater Houston Council of Federated Republican Women, and a photograph of a swearing in ceremony of the club’s leadership. These materials highlight the activities of the Braes Republican Women's Club in Houston. Many of the objects displayed here involve one of the donors of the collection, Eugenie Chen.
The Braes Republican Women's Club of Houston was founded by Peggy Brelsford and Vandalia Van Osdall in 1960 to inform residents in their neighborhood how to involve themselves in local, state, and national politics. Eugenie Chen, the wife of Dr. Edward C. M. Chen, was an active member of the club. She served as the corresponding secretary and as vice president. The club achieved electoral success supporting Republican candidates, including one of the club’s members, Kay Bailey (later U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.)
The original materials are held by the Woodson Research Center in Fondren Library. Search the finding aid/inventory for the Braes Republican Women's Club records, MS 601.
