Sam Houston papers
This collection contains correspondence written to and from Sam Houston in English and Spanish. Topics discussed include disobeyed orders and the recounting of civilian deaths. In addition the collection includes public meeting proceedings and a manifesto of the Committee of Vigilance and Safety of Houston.
Samuel Houston was born in Virginia in 1793 and was raised in Tennessee where he would eventually practice law. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives and served as governor of Tennessee. Houston lived in the Cherokee Nation before moving to Texas, where he was a leading figure in the establishment of Texas independence from Mexico. Houston was elected governor of Texas in 1859, but was removed from office when he refused to sign an oath of allegiance to the Confederate States of America.
