Major Winslow F. Sanderson Papers
This collection contains a letter from Charles Daniel to his son Thomas Daniel about the death of Major Sanderson by yellow fever in Galveston. It includes the description of Sanderson's illness and death, an accusation of poisoning, the theft of Sanderson's money, and prosecution of servants for theft.
Major Sanderson was a mounted rifleman in the U.S. Army who served on the western frontier and then in the Mexican War. In the summer of 1853, while awaiting a steamer to Galveston, he contracted yellow fever. After a brief recovery he traveled to Galveston, where he suffered a relapse of the fever and died.
