This collection contains photographs of oil drilling activities, oil workers, and equipment. The material provides an insight into the early days of the oil industry in Texas.
The Kirby Petroleum Company was formed in 1921 in Houston, Texas by John Henry Kirby. Through a number of mergers and name changes, it is still active as Kirby Corporation. Many of the records were created under the management of the company’s former president of 20 years, George Sawtelle, who died in 1967.
