John Campbell personal papers
This collection contains correspondence related to John Campbell and his family. Campbell immigrated from Ireland to Texas ca. 1820 and encouraged his family to join him. There are letters from the 1830s to the 1860s, and a family farm record book.
John Campbel was an Irish immigrant who left Ireland sometime in the late 1820s, spent some years exploring the Caribbean and South America, and eventually settled in the United States in the 1830s. After living in New York, he moved to Texas, first Austin then Seguin, where he farmed. He was too old to fight in the American Civil War, and was officially exempted from military duties. Several of his relatives immigrated; his relative James came to Texas and another branch of the family settled in San Antonio.
