Gilcrease Oil Company Early Days video
This collection contains a video of a silent film of the company’s drilling activity of the East Texas Oil Field near the towns of Longview and Gladewater. Using French and English titles, the video shows drilling rigs, derrick construction, oil gushers, flaring gas, and transportation.
The Gilcrease Oil Company was organized in Oklahoma in 1918, and chartered in 1922. By 1940 the company moved to San Antonio and was renamed the Gilcrease Oil Company of Texas. The discovery of the rich oilfield protected the area, and particularly Longview and Gladewater, from the harsh economic effects of the Great Depression.
