This collection contains Baker family portraits and photographs of the family home, the Oaks. Kate Kirkland used the materials for her book Captain James A. Baker of Houston, 1857-1941.
Captain James A. Baker was a Houston lawyer who represented Rice University’s namesake, William Marsh Rice, while working at the firm now known as Baker Botts L.L.P. Baker was also a banker and businessman who chartered several Houston businesses, developed two regional banks, and promoted real estate projects, all while enlarging the Rice Institute’s endowment.
