This collection contains orders, letters, and news articles about the Napoleonic Wars and Sir William Sidney Smith and his family.
Admiral William Sidney Smith, 1764-1840, was a commando-type raider, combining land and sea operations. Smith entered the navy in 1777 and saw action in the American Revolutionary War and spent a year with the Swedish Navy before serving in the Napoleonic Wars. Smith commanded the frigate Diamond which he used to conduct partisan warfare along the French coast and the Tigre in Levant. In 1799 he broke Napoleon's siege at Acre.
