Sir Richard John Strachan letter
This collection contains correspondence from Sir Richard John Strachan to Commodore Sir William Cornwallis, his squadron commander in the East Indies. Strachlan describes his role in the action against the French frigate Resolue off Pondicherry, India, which resulted in its capture.
Richard John Strachan was born on October 23, 1760. He entered the Royal Navy in 1773 and subsequently served on various ships in southeast Asia and the Caribbean and on the North American Station. On the death of his uncle on December 26, 1777, he succeeded to the baronetcy. At the time of this letter he was captain of the H.M.S. Phoenix. He later rose to the rank of Admiral. He died on February 3, 1828.
