This collections includes photographs, correspondence, and speeches that cover Lee Brown's career. Digitized as part of the Council on Library and Information Resources grant program, Hidden Selections of Houston’s African American and Jewish Heritage, 2020-2023.
Dr. Lee P. Brown received his doctorate in criminology from University of California, Berkeley. He went on to serve as the Sheriff of Multnomah County, Oregan, the Public Safety Commissioner of Atlanta, Georgia (1978-1982), the Police Chief of Houston, Texas (1982-1990), the New York City Police Commissioner (1990-1992), the Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (1993-1995), and the Mayor of Houston (1998-2004). Over his career, he also taught at Portland State University (1968-1972), Howard University (1972-1974), Texas Southern University (1992-1993), and Rice University (1996-1997).
