This collection consists of photographs, documents, and more related to the life and career of Judge Clarease Yates. Digitized as part of the Council on Library and Information Resources grant program, Hidden Selections of Houston’s African American and Jewish Heritage, 2020-2023.
In 1990 Judge Yates was appointed to a judgeship with the United States Immigration and Nationalization Service in Houston, Texas, thus becoming the first African-American immigration judge in the United States. As of 2026, she still fills that appointment. Shortly after moving to Houston, she served as an adjunct professor of immigration law at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Texas Southern University. She has been active in Houston's philanthropic community.
