John Wyatt Moody biographical papers
This collection consists of letters (dated 1946-1967) between Helen Foster Snow, relative of John Wyatt Moody, and Jean Halden Walker, both genealogists researching the Moody family and its family holdings in Houston.
John Wyatt Moody was the first auditor of the Republic of Texas, was deeply involved in financial dealings of the Republic, and owned much of the land which is now part of the City of Houston. Born 65 miles southwest of Richmond, Virginia, Moody moved to Alabama, then to Indian Territory, and finally settled in La Grange, Texas. Moody eventually bought fifteen acres along Buffalo Bayou from the Allen Brothers, noted land speculators in the Houston area.
