James F. Grimes U.S. Civil War letters
This collection consists of correspondence from Grimes addressed to Sarah A. Jones, Grimes’s romantic partner. The letters detail Grimes’s American Civil War experience including army camp life, weather conditions while on march, and observations of civilian conditions in areas affected most by the war.
Not much information is available about James F. Grimes’s life aside from the comments found in the letters. He was from Hillsboro, New Hampshire and was a Union soldier. He joined the Army’s 17th U.S. Infantry as a Captain prior to 1863. Grimes’s final listed rank was that of a Field Officer.
