James Lockhart Autry, III
James Lockhart Autry III, often referred to as "Jimmie" was the oldest child of Judge and Allie May Autry. He grew up enjoying wireless radio and was a licensed amateur radio operator and member of National Amateur Wireless Association, call number 5 ED. The family erected a tall aerial at No. 5. He attended Rice Institute and was active in the Honor Council, Student's Council, editor of the Thresher and member of the Idlers Club. Following his graduation in 1921 and the death of his father, he assumed the post of vice president of the American Petroleum Company and a director of the Fidelity Trust Company.
He was engaged to Anah Marie Leland, a fellow Rice alum, and was planning their wedding when he died unexpectantly following complications from surgery for appendicitis. His sister's scrapbook includes several obituaries from newspapers in Houston and Corsicana.
To honor her son's memory, Mrs. Autry donated $50,000 towards the establishment of a hospital school for children with tuberculosis, Autry Memorial Hospital School.
